General articles on Gastrointestinal Cancer

This section of the Advances in Gastrointestinal Cancer Resource Centre is where you will find cutting edge data on gastrointestinal cancers in the form of peer-reviewed original articles and review articles and the latest guidelines, all independently selected and several commented upon by members of the Editorial Board. Many of the articles are freely available for downloading.

Focusing initially on gastric cancer, these pages will provide new content each month to help you stay abreast of recent scientific developments in this area.

Since 1975, stomach cancer has dropped from first position to fifth in the list of most common cancers in the world, after lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers.1 In most of the world, however, few cases of stomach cancer are detected at an early stage, and 5-year survival rates range from less than 20% in developing countries to 54% in Japan, where a national screening programme facilitates earlier detection and treatment.2

Treatment approaches for stomach cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and surgery. Much research is under way to identify new therapeutic options.
